Portraits of women Artists by Pavel Piekar

  • The Portico Library 57 Mosley Street Manchester, England, M2 3HY United Kingdom (map)

This tribute to women artists has been written and designed by artist Pavel Piekar with the Czech Consulate in Manchester.

With this display, Piekar reminds us of the fascinating yet complicated destinies that female artists had to experience when they wanted to promote their work before liberation changes in the middle of the 20th century. From the ancient Greek poet Sapfó to Czech artist Zdenka Brauner and Mancunian Annie Swynnerton (pictured), this display shows how the qualities of their works proclaim and impress us, their life paths still evoke compassion and connect us deeply to our hearts.

Czech artist Pavel Piekar uses linocut with his signature method of bringing it closer to illusive painting. The theme is drawn into matrices for individual colours (30-50) and it uses a grid of different densities to capture the moment. This method differs from contemporary art practice in its effort to achieve a true emotional experience and to capture the atmosphere of a place. Piekar is one of the prominent representatives of contemporary graphic art and his permanent themes include Landscapes, Landscapes with Nudes, Portraits, Children, Architecture, Venice, and Italy. Emotional messages and crypto-self portraits are the main spheres of Piekar's artistic language.
