In this tour, Dr Debbie Challis will show you round some of the nooks and corners of the Portico Library, before introducing you to some of the women in print in he collection. From art historians to translators to artists, Debbie will peel back the pages to find the women that people read in the 19thC to mark International Women's Day and Women's History Month.
Dr Debbie Challis is Creative Producer at the Portico Libraryand a cultural historian. She is author of Archaeology of Race. The Eugenic Ideas of Francis Galton and Flinders Petrie (Bloomsbury 2013) and has published on the artist Mary Severn Newton in Gabriel Moshenska and Claire Lewis (eds), Life Writing in the History of Archaeology: Critical Approaches (UCL Press, 2023). She is co-editing a biography on the archaeologist Charles Thomas Newton for UCL Press and is a resident expert on the podcast Alex Andreou’s Podyssey.
