Earthrise: a short history of the whole Earth

  • The Portico Library 57 Mosley Street Manchester, England, M2 3HY United Kingdom (map)

£6 plus booking fee. Book here.

On Earth Day 2024 historian and author Robert Poole looks back at the famous ‘Earthrise' and ‘Blue Marble’ photos taken by the Apollo astronauts. How were these first photographs of the whole Earth taken, and how did they inspire the first Earth Day? We also compare the original ‘Blue Marble’ with a recent NASA whole Earth photo and ask: what effect has fifty years of climate change had on the face of Gaia?

Robert Poole is the author of the acclaimed book Earthrise: a Short History of the Whole Earth. Special copies will be available on the day.
