Legacies of Slavery & Abolition

15th September - 14th October 2017

Free public launch: 14th Sept, 6pm - 8pm

Writer, lecturer and historian Natalie Zacek has headed a team of researchers and artists to develop an exhibition and events programme revealing the networks of slave ownership in 18th and 19th-century Manchester and their legacies around the world. With the act of Abolition passing through parliament just months after the Portico Library was established, its early membership included both anti-slavery campaigners and their opponents. Discover the history of the Atlantic slave trade and its far-reaching consequences, with artworks and artefacts offering new insights.
