The Portico Library’s bookshelves and archives are home to more than 25,000 historical volumes across a world of different subjects, containing countless beautiful illustrations and illuminations. Join us for this rare opportunity to see our exhibition space brimming with highlights from the collection, reproduced exclusively for The Portico and available to buy as limited edition prints. Opening with a free preview evening on Thursday 23rd November from 6pm, these images will be shown alongside their original books and folios; come along and admire how the images in this exhibition speak of the wealth of creativity and inspiration enduring between the covers of these volumes.
Our unique collection covers a range of subjects including travel literature, natural history, poetry, fine arts, history and maps. These give us an insight into the minds of the library’s founders over 200 years ago and their successors throughout the 19th century. As full access to The Portico’s books is usually reserved for subscribers and researchers, this is an opportunity for everyone to experience the unseen rarities of our holdings. The exhibition also marks the launch of The Portico Library’s first colouring book of a selection of images from our volumes, and our annual Adopt-a-Book appeal, whereby anyone can sponsor the repair of a historic work, preserving it for the enjoyment and education of future generations. Please join us for the exhibition launch and consider rescuing one of these items by sponsoring either in your own name or in memory/on behalf of a loved one.
