The Portico Library’s bookshelves and archives are home to more than 25,000 historical volumes across a world of different subjects, containing countless beautiful illustrations and illuminations. Opening with a free preview evening on Thursday 23rd November from 6pm this exhibition is a rare opportunity to see our gallery space brimming with highlights from the collection, reproduced exclusively for The Portico and available to buy as limited edition prints at the library or at the-portico-library.squarespace.com. Shown alongside their original books and folios, these images speak of the wealth of creativity and inspiration enduring between the covers of the library’s volumes.
The Portico’s unique collection covers a range of subjects and formats including travel literature, natural science, poetry, fine arts, history and maps. These items offer us fascinating insights into the minds of the library’s founders over 200 years ago and their successors throughout the 19th century. The exhibition also marks the launch of The Portico Library’s first colouring book of a selection of images from our volumes, and our annual Adopt-a-Book appeal, whereby anyone can sponsor the repair of a historic work, preserving it for the enjoyment and education of future generations. Please join us for the exhibition launch and consider rescuing one of these items by sponsoring either in your own name or on behalf of a loved one.
