Visit Us

The Gallery area, its exhibitions and events as well as lunch and daily refreshments are open to everyone during our opening hours.

The Portico is located on the corner of Mosley Street and Charlotte Street

Tea or coffee and cake are available from the kitchen all day and light lunches are available from 12.00 to 14.00, Monday to Friday. Tea, coffee and cake is also served on Saturdays, 11am to 3pm. This can all be enjoyed in Gallery Cafe at the Portico, which sits under the glorious Georgian painted glass and plaster dome, surrounded by floor to ceiling bookshelves and the current exhibition! Staff are available to answer any questions you may have about the Library, Gallery, the building and their collective history.

Please be aware that, aside from the Gallery area, the nature of our special collection necessitates that access to other parts of the Library is restricted to members and researchers only.

Please do remember that anyone can join and you might like to ask about this when you visit.

There are occasions when the Gallery is closed due to meetings, private functions or exhibition changes. For this reason, we advise that you contact us in advance, particularly if you are travelling over a long distance to visit us.

We also request that any larger groups call ahead to inform us of your plans to visit The Portico. This will allow us to make any necessary arrangements and dedicate enough time to facilitate your visit to everyone's best advantage.
