The Portico Library launched the Portico Poetry Prize in 2012 with two categories: Open (Over 16s) and Young (Under 18s). This prize was piloted with independent funding by Lynne and David Allan and following the great success of the first year, was established as a significant member of the Portico Literary Prize family. The criteria for the prizes of the first three years were themed on Charles Dickens (2012), Correspondence (2013) and Conflict (2014). First, second and third places were assigned to the top three entries in both categories. Winners of the Open category received cash prizes and all winning entries were included in a Poetry anthology. In addition, the Open category facilitated the opportunity for young people to win a higher prize.
