The Association of Independent Libraries
The A.I.L. was formed in 1988 to bring together those libraries in the United Kingdom who depend mainly on charitable donations or membership fees. Their diverse collections make up a historic archive of the reading and collecting habits of the people who built them, ranging from Chetham's Library and The London Library to The Newcastle Literary & Philosophical Society and Westerkirk Parish Library.

Manchester Literary & Philosophical Society
The Manchester Literary & Philosophical Society has been in existence since 1781 and is one of the oldest learned societies in the country. Past members have included John Dalton, Peter Mark Roget, Ernest Rutherford and Joseph Whitworth amongst many other internationally prominent names.

A not-for-profit company - an umbrella organisation promoting the well-being of all the Societies associated with Greater Manchester - representing their views and their aspirations at City, Regional and National levels.
