| The Advantages
of Membership: Membership of the Library brings with it pleasures and privileges, not least of which is access to a place of civilised calm in the centre of the city. Members can enjoy the knowledge that many of Manchester's most famous citizens have been Proprietors of the Portico, familiar with the surroundings which give us so much pleasure today. Members may recommend that the Library buy the latest fiction and non-fiction, which can then be borrowed without reservation fees or fines. This is particularly valuable in these times of restricted book-buying by public libraries. Much of the older stock is available to members. There is a wide range of newspapers, periodicals and magazines available. During the year, the members have the opportunity of buying the books which have been withdrawn from the Library's new stock at special rates. Members may bring guests, and many do so, especially at lunchtime. Meals from the kitchen range from snacks and sandwiches to cooked lunches, served in quiet book-lined surroundings in the Library. There are monthly private views of exhibitions held at the Gallery, and a programme of evening events. These are often combined with a buffet supper, to give members and their guests a chance to meet socially as well as to enjoy an interesting talk or concert. We encourage the use of our collection particularly for 19th century studies. Students and researchers are, therefore, able to access the library freely by arrangement with the Librarian.
