The Portico Library & Gallery

The Portico Library and Gallery opened in 1806 as a Library and Newsroom and still occupies its original site - 'the most elegant and retired street in town' according to John Dalton. Its mainly 19th century collection is accessed by Members as well as researchers in the UK and abroad.

The Library continues to flourish as a hub of cultural activity by hosting a thriving and active programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year. These are open to members and the public generally. Check our online calendar to see what is coming up.

The Collection began with the foundation of the Library in 1806 and is mainly 19th century. There is a wide selection of travel literature, novels, biographies and history. Unusually for such a library in the 19th century, there is a fine representative selection of fiction, including a number of first editions. Besides Dickens, Bulwer Lytton, Wilkie Collins, Mrs Gaskell, there are many lesser known authors who are now becoming subjects of study.

The travel section is particularly strong covering the voyages of Captain Cook , many Victorian women travellers and Victorian continental exploration. There is a small but growing collection of North West fiction and local history. Topography includes 18th century antiquarian surveys of English counties as well as contemporaneous accounts. It is impossible to summarise what is a unique collection mirroring nineteenth century literary and intellectual interests.

Researchers are welcome to the Library to study from the permanent collection where this is appropriate to the area of research. A card catalogue provides essential basic information  so it is necessary to consult this or one of our in-house bibliographies before undertaking any study (the computerisation of the catalogue has just begun). To find out more, or to arrange a research visit, please contact our Librarian, Emma Marigliano.

Hiring this amazing space is also open to all... We’ve hosted book launches, award ceremonies, dinner parties, anniversary & birthday parties, wine tastings, wedding receptions, meetings (wifi available too) and even a fabulously risque photoshoot for a well known vodka brand!

We are a unique venue for any event. Why not check our image gallery for inspiration, watch this brilliant interview with Guy Garvey filmed in our Reading Room or see how the Gallery was transformed into a classroom for filming this advert!

If you are interested in hiring the Library and would like to discuss options, costs, etc, please contact our Business Manager, Charlotte Wand.

The Association of Independent Libraries
The Portico Library is a founding member of the A.I.L. The Association was formed in 1988 to bring together those libraries in the United Kingdom who depend mainly on charitable donations or membership fees. Their diverse collections make up a historic archive of the reading and collecting habits of the people who built them, ranging from Chetham's Library and The London Library to The Newcastle Literary & Philosophical Society.
